Hermosa Beach has been voted as one of the best beach communities by travel magazines in the past and there’s not much to argue with that claim. A beautiful beach, small town feel, one elementary and one middle school and just about everything is a short walk to the beach.
At the heart of Hermosa Beach is the downtown area and the focal point of Pier Plaza. Pier Ave cuts through the center of town and extends from the Hermosa pier to PCH and is lined with an array of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, yoga studios and other businesses. On “lower” pier the city long ago took cars out of the equation by making pier plaza a pedestrian only block allowing for a wonderful beach vibe with kids on skateboards, people casually walking around, and a quieter atmosphere without the traffic. This palm lined walk offers stores and restaurants that range from the newer more trendy restaurants and bars to some of the longstanding local hangouts such as the Lighthouse and Fat Face Fenners. Rent a bike at the Hermosa cyclery, or a surfboard from one of the local surf shops. Hermosa is a great destination town and pier plaza is a must visit.
